Your Heart Betrays You
If evolution is true, then human beings do not have a heart as taught by the Bible and Jesus.
Your heart. You have one. And, whether you believe it or not, you have two. One is the anatomical organ that pumps blood. The other is the deep, immaterial seat of human thinking and emotions.
There's a problem, however, if you believe evolution is a true explanation for the origin of human beings. Because evolution can explain only one of the hearts, if any at all. The evolutionary explanation for human existence is a natural explanation that purports to explain the origin of humans as an agglomeration of matter only formed by a process of matter manipulation only. A clever agglomeration and a remarkable process, perhaps. But matter alone for sure.
Atoms in motion, nothing more. That is the source of all that is you if evolution is true. Anything perceived to be immaterial, such as your mind, your heart, your emotions—it’s all just that: perception. It is not real. It cannot be.
What are we to make of Jesus' words, then? Jesus made many interesting observations about the distinction between material and immaterial aspects of humans. He said, for example, that humans should love God with all their hearts. If evolution is true, then this statement is nonsense. God has no particular claim on you and the heart Jesus speaks of here is not even real. And for that matter—so to speak—what is love? Think of it this way: could you build love from just the right amount of this and that from the periodic table of the elements?
Jesus also noted something more sinister. He said that it is not the material stuff, e.g., food, that enters a man from the outside that makes him unclean. No, it is what comes out of a man that makes him unclean. Jesus said, "For from within, out of men's hearts, come evil thoughts, sexual immorality, theft, murder, adultery, greed, malice, deceit, lewdness, envy, slander, arrogance and folly." And he called all these things "evil."
Evil? Out of one's heart?
If evolution is true, then this is simply more nonsense. If you are nothing more than a material talking beast created by blind, pitiless, and uncaring nature then there is no such thing as "evil" for you. Evil is, if anything, a
concept contrived by other talking beasts, and you have no natural allegiance to any of them.
But then, you may be thinking to yourself, I know within myself that I have many evil thoughts; where do all my evil thoughts come from? For surely I know that I can't blame other talking beasts. They did not put the evil thoughts there. And how do I even know they are evil? And why do I know that so many of my actions are bad even when others call them good?
Maybe Jesus' words are not nonsense after all. But if Jesus' words are true that means that there is an important immaterial part of you—your heart—that cannot have been created by evolutionary processes. You have a heart inside you that you will never find it on an X-ray, MRI scan, anatomy book, or autopsy. But it is there, and you know it.
Why is it there?
Think about that.
